Margot McLean è nata a Tokyo, in Giappone. (Americano)  Ha conseguito un BFA in pittura e incisione presso la Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia (1974) e un MFA in pittura presso la Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York (1977).

Ha insegnato e tenuto conferenze negli Stati Uniti, nel Regno Unito e in Giappone.Ha ricevuto una borsa di studio della New York Foundation for the Arts, Stato di New York, 1982: è stata artista in residenza Esalen Institute, Big Sur, CA, 1995: e ha ricevuto un Nathan Cummings Foundation Grant per aver organizzato la conferenza "Visual Art and the Environment", 1996.È stata determinante nelle attività di un gruppo di artisti, filosofi, biologi, scrittori, insegnanti e attivisti ambientali in un progetto in corso per indagare idee sotto il titolo di "The Human Place in the Natural World".
